How To Replace the Clutch in a Fox-Body Mustang (Hot Rod)

When maintaining your old project car or with the purchase of a new project, as is the case with this 1986 Ford Mustang GT, there are several things you can expect to do at some point in time. Those generally fall in the category of basic maintenance or simple bolt-on upgrades, and a clutch swap is one that fits both categories.

The clutch in this Fox-body needed to be replaced, so we called our friends at Ram Clutches for a clutch from its HDX line (PN 88794HD) and a 50-ounce billet steel flywheel (PN 1525) to match. Our GT still has the factory 10-spline 1-1/16-inch input shaft, and we didn't need anything super heavy-duty, so the HDX clutch and flywheel perfectly fit our needs. Ram's HDX clutch is for applications up to 450 horsepower, which allows plenty of room to add more power to the Mustang later.

Ram's HDX line is also cost-effective. On several mail-order websites, we saw the clutch for sale with a $250 price tag, and adding the flywheel to your shopping cart will require an additional $300. When many clutches come in over $1,000, the HDX is a bargain, so if your modestly powered Fox needs a clutch, the HDX will fit the bill without taxing your wallet.
