2020 Shelby GT500 is the Ultimate Ford Mustang (Houston Chronicle)

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is the most powerful, balanced and expensive production Mustang in history.

How quick is it? Let’s put it this way: the GT500 goes from zero to 60 mph in about the same time it takes most of us to say its whole name out loud. Other numbers that help make this newest Shelby the apex predator in the Mustang lineup: 760 horsepower, 625 lb.-ft. of torque, mid-11s in the quarter-mile.

And remember that we said it’s balanced? Not only do its drivers get the go, the Shelby GT500 delivers the whoa via massive Brembo 16.5-inch front rotors and six-piston calipers.

Performance, however, still takes cubic dollars — not to mention lots of air, fuel and spark. To put this track and highway monster in your garage, not counting tax, license and other fees, it will run you at least 75 grand, $2,600 of which is a gas guzzler tax. And that doesn’t even get you those iconic Shelby stripes.

Go wild with the options and packages, and you’re knocking on six figures. Still, if you have the will, the means and a Ford store that won’t bloat the bottom line by tacking on a dealer markup, many will say this supercar-hunting pony/muscle car is worth every dime.
