2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca is Collector's Gold
The Ford Mustang needs no introduction — the pony car is classified as the best-selling sports car of all time, and in recent years has gone from strength to strength with a broadening catalog that includes the Shelby GT350 and GT500, Bullitt, as well as the new-for-2021 Mustang Mach 1. But with an impressive back catalog including racing derivatives and numerous special editions, there's gold to be found for discerning collectors who are willing to spend when the time is right. This may be just the right time for such an investment as an ultra-rare 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition has come up for sale at Russo and Steele in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The 2013 Boss 302 was launched to pay tribute to the 1969-70 model of the same name, a car that dominated the SCCA Trans-Am racing series. At the time of launch, the 2013 Boss 302 was the most potent non-Shelby Mustang one could buy, with a 5.0-liter (approximately 302 cubic inches) V8 engine developing 444 horsepower at a heady 7,500 rpm redline, sending power to the rear axle via a six-speed manual gearbox. Boss 302-specific modifications included forged pistons, high-performance valve springs, high-lift cams, and an oil cooler.
Big Brembo brakes aided stopping power, while adjustable shocks and electronic power steering were curated for maximum performance.
The Laguna Seca Edition was rare and track-focused, with additional brake cooling ducts, a Torsen limited-slip differential, an aggressive front splitter, and R-compound rubber wrapped around gray-painted 19-inch alloy wheels. Recaro seats with "Boss 302" embroidery and a rear-seat deletion gave the car a unique interior feel, as did the cross-car X brace for added stiffness. The 2013 model featured Sterling Gray accents, a redesigned grille, and LED daytime running lights. Just 750 were produced, with only 501 wearing a black paint job with matte silver stripes.
