Shelby American Unveils the Super Snake Speedster
Shelby Has Been Making Mustangs Better Since Their Introduction, But This Is A First For The Storied Marque.
There are two ways to buy a new Shelby Mustang: Option 1. Go to just about any Ford dealership in the country, order yourself a GT500 and call it a day. But, the 2021 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is lacking something — a serialized CSM number, that would make it a true Shelby Mustang. So, then there's option 2 — call the people that are still making Mustangs better everyday, Shelby American.
A Shelby Super Snake is not just a GT500 with a badge-package and a shoutier exhaust (but it does have that). The Shelby American-built Super Snake gets new pulleys on the polished Whipple supercharger and fresh engine tuning, upping the already considerable power of the Predator 5.2L V8 to a conservatively rated 825hp on 93-octane pump juice. Shelby also installs new, stronger half shafts to get all that power down, going through one-piece forged aluminum wheels.
Automatic transmissions receive an external oil cooler; manuals, a short-throw shifter and a one-piece drive shaft. Everyone gets a larger-capacity radiator with a super-trick looking, fabricated aluminum overflow tank. Revised tuning in the adaptive suspension and a Shelby-specific Borla cat-back exhaust system finish out standard performance modifications.
Shelby doesn't want your CSM-serialized Super Snake to look like just any other Mustang. No, the Super Snake also gets Shelby-designed body work including a new front clip and splitter, tail panel and rear diffuser, side skirts, rear spoiler and a dry carbon fiber hood — all designed for functionality not just looks, improving under-hood airflow, extracting heat and guiding air to the brakes and various coolers.
First Ever Shelby Super Snake Speedster
And then there's the options: Widebody, convertible (can't get a convertible Shelby from Ford) and—for the first time ever in the history of Shelby American — Speedster. That's right, evoking the streamlined readsters of the 1960s, Shelby recently unveiled the 2021 Shelby Super Snake Speedster to members of Team Shelby, the official Shelby owners club with more than 80,000 members worldwide.
