1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Fastback Flexes 427 Cammer V8 Power
Combine one really cool Ford Mustang with one very rare and badass Ford Cammer mill, and you end up with a very unique ride.
If you were to list the most iconic muscle cars of the '60s and early '70s, the 1969 Ford Mustang fastback would have to be near the top of that list. The Mustang fastbacks have always had iconic lines, but of the various years available we would have to pick the 1969 models as our favorite. And while they were offered by Ford with various engines from mild to wild, the 1969 Mustang we're talking about here falls firmly into the "what-if" category.
You see, this one doesn't have what you would expect under the hood. Nope, this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is fielding a 427 SOHC Cammer V-8! About 8 years ago the owner did a full restoration of the Mustang but just couldn't decide what engine to put in it. Well, he was a collector and had some engines in storage, and one of them was an extremely rare vintage Cammer mill. The engine was gone though mechanically and then grafted into the Mustang by Classic Automotive in Inglewood, California.
What Is A Cammer Engine?
The SOHC Cammer engine, nicknamed the "90-Day Wonder" by Ford's X-Garage development team, was introduced in 1964 as a high-rpm racing mill to take on the Chrysler 426 Hemi "Elephant" V-8 that was dominating both Top Fuel drag racing and NASCAR.
Sadly, the Cammer was banned by NASCAR before it could run in a single race, but it went on to become popular in drag racing and found its way into more than a few street cars (remember that silver Cobra from The Hollywood Knights movie?). The Cammer was based around the famed Ford FE big-block (NASCAR and Le Mans) and was easy to spot with its massive cylinder heads, which were necessitated by the hemispherical combustion chambers. Out of the box the Cammer was good for 616 hp at 7,000 rpm and 515 lb-ft at 3,800. It's an engine that loves to rev and can easily hit 8,000 rpm.
