2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Challenges BMW M8 Competition to a Drag Race

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Challenges BMW M8 Competition to a Drag Race

Even with all-wheel drive and a set of turbos, the M8 has a tough time keeping up with the supercharged Shelby.

It seems like there's no stopping the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. It's taken on all sorts of other comparable new cars, only to school them in straight-line dashes. And it continues to dominate, as evidenced from this latest DragTimes video.

If any new big V-8-powered bruiser could take the GT500 down in the quarter-mile, it'd be the new BMW M8 Competition. Sporting a 617-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 and all-wheel drive, it has the grip and low-end torque to get the jump on the traction-limited Shelby. According to BMW, 0-60 comes in just three seconds flat — two tenths quicker than the Mustang.

But that grip and turbocharged thrust isn't enough to topple the 760-horsepower Mustang in the quarter-mile. The two cars go up against each other four times in the video above, and each time, the result is the same. The M8 holds the lead right up until the finish, when the Shelby's extra horsepower and fast-shifting dual-clutch start to pay dividends and take the win. The only time the M8 wins is when it jumps the start during race three, and even then, the quarter-mile times are nearly identical.

The GT500 just keeps racking up wins. We have a feeling it'll be awhile until another pony car can conquer its reign.
