Enough Mach E already; looks like the real Mach 1 could be making a comeback!

As iconic nameplates go, 'Mach 1' must be up there with Z28, ZR-1 and GTA as one of the most legendary. It first appeared in 1968 for the 1969 model year Ford Mustang, seeing service in the range for a decade as the model (and entire car) was gradually neutered during the 1970s. Having withered away acrimoniously, the Mach 1 made a return in 2003, albeit only until 2004. So the possibility of the badge's return is a pretty significant one, albeit with the moniker still trading off 1960's cool - in 1969 Ford offered a Mach 1 alongside a GT, Boss 302, Boss 429, Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500.

So here's what is said to be a new Mach 1 for 2021, a car that will once again sit between GT and Shelby models in the Ford line up. It's being suggested already that the car will replace the Bullitt in the Mustang range, with around 500hp; the GT now has 450hp, the Bullitt had 480 and the GT350 530, so it would fit nicely.

This particular car is the first that's been seen of a Mach 1, and very encouraging it looks too. Note the new wheels (similar to those seen on CS BMWs), Michelin tyres protruding from the bodywork and chunky Brembo calipers; both front and rear spoilers are more pronounced than standard, which the camo is attempting to hide. According to our super sleuth photographer, the Mach 1 also possessed a "mellifluous V8 soundtrack" from what look like chunkier exhausts to accompany its "fetching array" of accessories.

The Mach 1 isn't yet confirmed for any Mustang range update, but even if this car doesn't have the hallowed nameplate affixed to its rump, it looks like an exciting addition to the models currently available. Given it's being suggested that the Mach 1 would be a 2021 model year car, we shouldn't have long to wait to find out either way.
