Consensus: Sporty, fun to drive, and plenty quick with any engine, the 2022 Ford Mustang is a pleasurable coupe or convertible at a reasonable price. Back seat space is tight in either model, and interior quality could be better.
Few cars are more representative of America than the classic Ford Mustang, which has been in continuous production since 1964. Not only does the 2022 Ford Mustang carry on that legacy, but it is the only car Ford sells in the United States. The similarly named Mustang Mach-E is an electric SUV that shares just a few styling cues with this car.
The Mustang is all about driving, with even the base 4-cylinder engine making 310 horsepower (332 with the High-Performance package), all the way up to a 760-hp 5.2-liter supercharged V8 in the limited-edition Shelby GT500. A 6-speed manual is the base transmission, with a 10-speed automatic optional and a 7-speed automatic in the bonkers Shelby GT500. All Mustangs are rear-wheel drive.
We like the base engine, particularly with the optional High-Performance package, which increases power and includes a sportier suspension. The lower weight of the smaller engine in the front makes for excellent steering.
Inside, the best spot to be is in the front, particularly in the convertible, which loses rear space, shoulder room, and trunk space to the coupe. Either way, there are some cheap interior plastics, but the layout is ok, and we’re grateful for standard blind-spot monitoring due to the thick rear pillars. The Mustang never pretended to be a luxury car.
Standard features include keyless entry, A/C, Wi-Fi, AppLink (a type of smartphone integration), and a TrackApps feature. Safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance.
Upper trims add simulated leather upholstery, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and satellite radio, and of course lots of performance upgrades such as a limited-slip differential, sportier suspension, and better brakes.
